Art and Textiles at Stoke Park School focuses on creating visually appealing pieces of Artwork with imagination and skill.

In art, craft and design at Stoke Park School, students explore visual, tactile and other sensory experiences to communicate ideas and meanings. They work with traditional and new media, developing confidence, competence, imagination and creativity. We encourage our learners to appreciate and value images and artefacts across times and cultures, and to understand the contexts in which they were made. The aim is that the skills developed can be applied to a wide range of other aspects of art and design and that these may be taken up in higher education for practical degree courses such as Architecture, Graphic Design, Film, Product Design or Fashion and Textiles.

At Stoke Park we encourage experimentation with materials and ideas using traditional Art and Textiles media. Experimenting allows students to develop their evaluative and analytical skills of artist’s work past and present and to also create textiles products that function with an aesthetic appeal.

We aim to deliver projects that give everyone the opportunity to experience art and textiles in a fulfilling and meaningful way, irrespective of natural ability and misconceptions. Lower School projects focus on the fundamentals of creating artwork and textiles products – the formal elements in art and construction techniques in textiles. These concepts are revisited and developed to a higher level at GCSE and further at A-level. Cross-curricular links are explored at every opportunity, so that knowledge and understanding gained in relation to Art can be applied to a range of other contexts including PSHE and many relevant issues facing today’s students.

Art and Textiles courses are taught within the GCSE Art & Design qualification. This provides the template to deliver projects to all year groups so the transition to GCSE and A Level is smooth. Most of the work produced in Art, continues to use traditional media, with techniques such as drawing, painting, collage and three-dimensional construction preferred because of the flexibility and tactility they offer. In Textiles students are encouraged to develop complex textile garments or use the techniques developed in projects throughout their time at Stoke Park to create pieces of artwork.

Art club is open to lower school during lunchtime and GCSE students are always welcome to complete coursework in their own time. Students are also encouraged to make independent visits to galleries and museums in London and beyond. We have a wealth of experience within the department who are working artists, this is also helped by hosting visits from well-known local artists and beyond.
