Science
Science in years 7 & 8 is loosely based on the Exploring Sciences Texts and resources, and our aim is to be imaginative in the delivery of lessons and give students the chance to be involved in a variety of activities. These can involve, investigative practical work, group activities, presentations to the class, problem solving and research projects.
Now we no longer have formal SATs testing it has given us the chance to be more imaginative with the curriculum from year 9 onwards. All students have the opportunity to start their GCSE science courses in Year 9, beginning with OCR Gateway Science Core GCSE. We are aware that all students achieve and enjoy learning in different ways. Students who prefer coursework to examinations will also be entered for BTEC which is the equivalent to 2 GCSE grades. Students who enjoy learning outside can start the OCR Environmental Land Based Science GCSE and as part of their coursework, they will run a mini business enterprise, growing, costing and selling their produce.
When students get to year 11 they can study Additional Science which will also be preparation for those who wish to carry on into the 6th Form. Keen scientists can also start single sciences in Year 10. So we feel we have something for everyone, whatever their ability or interest in the sciences.
There will be opportunities for students to go on visits or attend fun trips to reward good work.
Students will also be involved in STEM activities where they might construct and test their own wind turbines or rocket propelled cars.
Sixth form courses include A Level Biology Chemistry and Physics. We also offer BTEC Forensic Science for students in the sixth form who would like a more vocational experience. Level Biology students have the opportunity to go to Dol-y-Moch to study Fieldwork and fun team building activities.
The Science Department is very supportive of students’ needs and offer numerous revision sessions to prepare for examinations.
